Tabletoppers

"A tabletopper is a stitched doily.  When I was growing up we had lots of doilies in my Mommie's house.  There were crocheted ones, knitted ones, embroidered ones, and even a few cross stitched ones!  So to keep the tradition going, I present you with the tabletopper:  an easy to stitch, easy to maintain 'doily' for your house from me" - Claudia Dutcher

The tabletoppers presented here measure approximately 21.5" x 21.5" and are made from Anne Cloth and use threads like Pearl Cotton and Caron threads.

Stitchers Paradise carries Anne Cloth precut to tabletopper size.  Price is $13 - $15 depending on color.

Gisela's Topper Tips

Unnecessary for most of you (Claudia's instructions are excellent) but perhaps a help for a few other attention-challenged stitchers like me.

1.    Anne Cloth has a front and back side.  Some of us have missed noticing this when we hemmed and fringed first.

2.   The first thread next to the woven border stripes on the Anne Cloth can be easy to miss because some tend to hide under the border a bit. Take a close look for it before you start to stitch across each section because you could briefly lose you good humor when you get to the other end and find you have only one thread left for that last stitch "over".

3.    If you enjoy lush fringe, count the available threads on all four edges of your cloth.  You may be able to add 6 or 8 threads to your fringe length.

4.   Once you have started the non-stitched edge on each side, pull out the first thread just outside it.  This will help you avoid jumping out of the proper row as you stitch.

5.   When using Watercolors with wide color variances, cut your stitching lengths in the middle of the same color you stopped with and colors will continue to flow smoothly.

6.   Whether stitching with solids or overdyes, plan your stitching path and stick to it.  Not only will this make your exposed backside a bit neater, but, in the unlikely event you went should have to reverse stitch, you'll always know where you came from!
